PSU Mens Ice Hockey records four-goal third-period comeback to defeat Assumption
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Sophomore Topo LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.) capped a wild four-goal third-period comeback for Plymouth State University Saturday evening, scoring his second goal of the game with 1:43 remaining and lifting the Panthers past Assumption College, 5-4, in an ECAC Northeast Conference men's ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
Plymouth State remains unbeaten in conference play (7-0-0), improving to 9-5-1 overall, while Assumption drops to 4-12-0 overall and 3-5-0 in the Northeast.
PSU had a 28-13 advantage in shots on goal through two periods, but trailed on the scoreboard 4-1. LaCroix started the Panther comeback with a goal at 5:21 of the third, and senior Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass) pulled PSU to within a goal at the 12:16 mark.
Freshman defenseman Pat Turcotte (Goffstown, N.H.) scored the tying goal for PSU at the 14:48 mark, and Topo LaCroix scored the game-winner on a back-hander at 18:17, with junior Goose LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.), who had scored the first goal of the game back in the first period, assisting.
Assumption had taken the 4-1 lead through two frames on first-period goals by sophomores Matt Paget (Hingham, Mass.) and Pat Ciummo (Harrisville, R.I.), and second-period tallies by senior Jeff Ilvonen (Auburn, Mass.) and freshman Craig Moreton (Lynnfield, Mass.)
The Panthers finished with a 38-17 margin in shots on goal. Sophomore goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) made 13 saves to earn the win for PSU, while Ice Dogs freshman David Pinkham (Malden, Mass.) finished with 33 saves.
PSU continues its four-game home stand with a non-conference home game Tuesday against Southern Maine (6:00 p.m.) Assumption begins a three-game home stand next Saturday (Jan. 28) against Franklin Pierce (7:30 p.m.)
