Third-period rally powers Southern Maine past PSU Mens Ice Hockey
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - The University of Southern Maine scored five unanswered goals in the third period, including three power play goals and one on a penalty shot, as the Huskies rallied to defeat Plymouth State University, 5-1, in non-conference men's college ice hockey action at Waterville Valley Arena.
Junior Mark Carragher (Charleton, PEI) led the Huskies with a goal and two assists, while senior Jim LeBlanc (Dorval, Que.) and freshman Josh Giordani (Quincy, Mass.) added a goal and an assist apiece. Giordani's goal came on a penalty shot.
PSU freshman defenseman Pat Turcotte (Goffstown, N.H.) scored the only goal of the first period, one-timing a pass from senior Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass) from the high slot. It was Turcotte's second straight game with a goal, and Kane increased his career point total to 97 (52 goals, 45 assists).
Neither team was able to score in the second period. The Huskies had a golden chance to tie the score with 32 seconds left in the middle frame, but PSU sophomore goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) stopped a penalty shot by Carragher.
The Panthers (9-6-1) started the third period up a goal but two men down, and the Huskies immediately capitalized. LeBlanc tied the game 48 seconds into the frame during the 5-on-3, and Carragher gave USM the lead just 14 seconds later. Giordani extended the margin to 3-1 with the penalty shot goal at 12:55, and freshmen Ben Loss (Wilmette, Ill.) and Steve Kelley (Quincy, Mass.) added insurance goals at 14:48 and 18:02, respectively.
USM (5-10-2) led the Panthers in shots on goal, 46-20, including an 18-4 margin in the third period. Helgesson finished with 41 saves, his fifth 40-plus save effort of the season. The Huskies used three goalies, with junior David Beckless (Stamford, Conn.) making eight saves in the first period, sophomore Tyler Ravlo (Yarmouth, N.S.) stopping seven shots in the middle stanza, and sophomore Ryan Sullivan (Newton, Mass.) recording four saves in the third period.
PSU has two key ECAC Northeast Conference home games in its next two outings - Saturday against Wentworth (6:00 p.m.) and next Tuesday vs. Curry (6:00 p.m.) USM returns home to host Bowdoin on Friday (7:00 p.m.)
