WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Defending champion Curry College handed the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team its first conference loss of the season Tuesday night, edging the Panthers 3-2 in a key Northeast Conference game at Waterville Valley Arena.
PSU junior Goose LaCroix (Moretown, Vt) scored his second goal of the game at 6:57 of the third period to tie the score at 2-2, but junior George Cademartori (Warrenville, Ill.) notched the eventual game-winner on a Curry power play at the 11:03 mark. The Colonels maintain control of first place in the Northeast, improving to 9-1-1 in league play and 10-9-1 overall. PSU dropped to 8-1-0 in the Northeast, 10-7-1 overall.
Curry junior Steve Kelleher (Rockland, Mass) scored the only goal of the first period, an unassisted marker 47 seconds after the opening face-off. LaCroix evened the score with his first goal on the power play 4:25 into the second period, but freshman defenseman Jason Tarbell (Manchester, N.H.) gave the Colonels the lead back at 7:04 with a nice goal, intercepting a pass and walking through the Panther defense.
The Colonels finished with a 35-33 advantage in shots, with 22 of PSU's 33 shots coming during a penalty-filled second period. PSU sophomore goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) made 32 saves, while Curry senior Lenny Mosca (Ludlow, Mass.) finished with 31 stops.
PSU, which has had home ice advantage the past four games, plays its next three on the road, beginning Saturday with a conference game at Johnson & Wales (7:00 p.m.) Curry has a week off before returning to action next Tuesday in a non-league tilt at Babson (7:00 p.m.)
