Johnson & Wales nips PSU Mens Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Johnson & Wales University scored goals in the final minute of the second period and first minute of the third Saturday night, and that proved to be the difference in a 4-3 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast men's ice hockey game.
The Panthers dropped their second straight Northeast game after beginning the conference season with eight straight wins. PSU is now 10-8-1 overall and 8-2 in the league, while JWU is 9-11-1 overall and 7-4-0 in the Northeast.
Junior Jay Londer (Philadelphia, Pa.) pulled PSU even at 2-2 with 3:02 to play in the second period, but sophomore Matt McGilvary (Rochester, N.H.) put the Wildcats ahead with 37 seconds on the second-period clock, and freshman Philip Axelson (Gothenburg, Sweden) scored what turned out to be the game-winner 38 seconds into the third stanza.
Sophomore defenseman Bobby Dashner (Hyde Park, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season for PSU with 11 minutes to play in the third to again pull the Panthers to within a goal, but the Wildcats held off the Panthers the rest of the way.
The Panthers had taken a 1-0 lead in the first period on a power play goal by senior Matt Withers (Laconia, N.H.), but Johnson & Wales came back with goals by sophomores Andrew Frew (Concord, N.H.) and Ryan Lord (Spaulding, Vt.) to take a 2-1 lead after opening frame.
Johnson & Wales had a 33-24 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman Marcus Strang (Gothenburg, Sweden) made 21 saves to earn the win for the Wildcats. PSU sophomore Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) finished with 29 stops for the Panthers.
Plymouth State plays its second straight road game Wednesday when it visits Suffolk for an 8:15 p.m. conference game, while Johnson & Wales is home again Thursday to host Fitchburg State (7:00 p.m.)
