WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Morrisville State College scored goals on four of 10 power play attempts Friday night and handed Plymouth State University a 6-3 non-conference defeat in the men's ice hockey opener at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
Juniors Joe Herman (Congers, N.Y.) and Matt Damskov (Spokane, Wash.) and sophomore Nick Carelli (Genelle, B.C.) each scored a power play goal and added an assist for the Mustangs, while freshman Andrew Alarie (Carlisle, Ont.) also tallied one with a man-advantage.
MSC, a former junior college in its first year as an NCAA Division III independent, improves to 2-6-0 on the season, while PSU drops to 0-1-0. Plymouth State finished with a 39-24 advantage in shots for the game, but freshman Travis Moore (Simcoe, Ont.) earned the win in net for the Mustangs with a 36-save effort.
The teams traded first period goals, with juniors Chris Cadieux (Nashua, N.H.) and Deni Bojadzic (Gothenburg, Sweden) scoring for PSU and Carelli and Herman answering for the Mustangs. MSC sophomore Patrick Morss (Geneseo, N.Y.) and Bojadzic exchanged unassisted goals early in the second period, and the game remained tied until sophomore Matt Bendall (Flint, Mich.) put the Mustangs ahead for good with 3:40 to play in the second period. PSU outshot the visitors 15-6 in the second period, but trailed 4-3 heading into the third.
It was more of the same in the final frame, as PSU outshot MSC 12-7, but the Mustangs scored the only goals. Alarie put one in at the 6:50 mark, and Damskov rounded out the scoring with 1:11 remaining.
The two teams will play again Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
