FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - Senior Jay Londer (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored the game-winning goal a minute, 54 seconds into overtime Saturday night to lift Plymouth State University to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Framingham State College in ECAC Northeast Conference ice hockey action.
PSU stopped a five-game losing skid and improved to 4-9-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the ECAC Northeast, while the Rams fell to 2-10-1 and 0-5-1. Three of the Panthers' four conference games have been overtime affairs, with PSU going 2-1-0 in the extra session.
Plymouth State trailed 2-0 after one period and 3-1 in the middle of the third before staging a comeback. Senior Goose LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.) scored twice in the third period to tie it, an even-strength goal from Londer at the 9:51 mark, and a power play goal from junior Bobby Dashner (Hyde Park, Mass.) at 16:08.
The outcome gave PSU freshman goalie Erik Shields (Lebanon, Maine) his first career victory. He made 27 saves in his first start after three previous appearances in relief.
Framingham State took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by freshmen Jeremy Schmidt (Huffman, Texas) and Colin Goodwin (Marblehead, Mass.). Dashner cut the margin to 2-1 with a goal for PSU early in the second period, and it stayed that way until Kyle Hallett (somewhere) put the Rams back up by two at 8:34 of the third period. That was just before PSU started the comeback.
PSU finished with a 41-30 advantage in shots, the first time in 11 games that the Panthers led in that department.
The Panthers return home to host Nichols College in a conference match-up Wednesday at Waterville Valley Arena (6:00 p.m.) Framingham State plays a non-conference game Tuesday at Southern Maine (7:00 p.m.)
