BOSTON, Mass. - Junior Jeff Oddleifson (North Vancouver, B.C.) scored a pair of goals and added an assist, sophomore Matt Gilman (Groveland, Mass.) provided three helpers, and freshman goalie Justin Marriott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) turned aside all 22 shots he faced Friday night as the Wentworth men's ice hockey team moved into a three-way tie for first place in the ECAC Northeast Conference with a 6-0 win over Plymouth State University at Matthews Arena.
Wentworth's third consecutive win moves the Leopards to 10-7-3 overall and 7-1-2 in league play, sharing first place with both UMass Dartmouth (8-0-0) and Curry (8-1-0). PSU had its four-game winning streak stopped and fell to 7-10-1 and 6-2-0.
After a scoreless first period, the Leopards would get all the offense they needed at 8:49 of the middle frame when Oddleifson netted his first goal of the season, a power play marker. Senior Matt Buono (Ashburnham, Mass.) tipped in a rebound of a freshman Andrew Affronti (Nesconset, N.Y.) shot at the 11:42 mark, and just 15 seconds later, the lead increased to 3-0 when Oddliefson netted his second of the game.
The Leopards added three more tallies in the final stanza as sophomore Derek Rupert (Louisville, N.Y.) scored 1:25 into the frame, followed by freshman Jeff Olitch's (Calgary, Alb.) team-leading 14th tally of the year-a power play goal at 8:30, while freshman Martin Winzer (Nuremberg, Germany) rounded out the scoring with 4:58 to play.
Marriott earned his first career shutout by making 22 saves, including 10 in the second stanza when the Panthers had several attempts from point-blank range. He improves to 8-5-2 on the season. Plymouth State freshman Erik Shields (Lebanon, Maine) took his first loss of the season (4-1), making 23 saves on 29 shots over the first 55:02. He was replaced by senior Brendan Fahy (Plymouth, Mass.) for the final five minutes.
PSU is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 1, with a visit to conference co-leader Curry (7:35 p.m.). Wentworth is idle until Saturday, Feb. 3, when the Leopards travel to Salve Regina.
