Suffolk edges Plymouth State Mens Ice Hockey
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Junior Dan Pencinger (Randolph, N.J.) scored two goals and freshman Bill Gilbert (Forestdale, Mass.) stopped 41 shots Wednesday evening to lead Suffolk University to a 4-3 victory over Plymouth State University in ECAC Northeast Conference men's hockey action at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
Freshman Bryan Smusz (Danville, Va.) gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with a first-period power play goal, and Pencinger and freshman Mike Mondello (Lynn, Mass.) added even strength goals in the second period to extend the margin to 3-0. Plymouth State got on the board with five minutes to go in the second period on a power play goal by junior Chris Cadieux (Nashua, N.H.)
Pencinger tallied a short-handed goal 1:39 into the third period for the eventual game-winner for the Rams. PSU senior Jay Londer (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior Deni Bojadzic (Gothenburg, Sweden) scored goals at 14:29 and 18:25 to pull the Panthers to within one goal, but Gilbert held tight in the Suffolk goal and the Rams skated away with the win.
Bojadzic had a hand in all three Panther markers with a goal and two assists. Sophomore Mitch Sabo (Bell Canyon, Calif.) collected a pair of assists for the Rams.
PSU finished with a 44-34 advantage in shots on goal. Gilbert made 19 of his 41 saves in the first period while keeping the Panthers off the board. Freshman Erik Shields (Lebanon, Maine) suffered the loss for PSU, finishing with 32 saves.
PSU, 8-12-1 overall and 7-4-0 in league play, plays another conference home game Saturday against Fitchburg State (6:00 p.m.) Suffolk, 7-13-1 overall and 6-6-0 in the ECAC Northeast, returns home to host Nichols in a conference game on Sunday (3:25 p.m.)
