Plymouth State and Nichols skate to 2-2 tie in mens ice hockey
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Nichols College freshman Will Munson (Corona, Cal.) scored the tying goal with 10 minutes remaining in the third period Saturday evening as Bison came back to tie Plymouth State University, 2-2, in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
It was the season opener for Plymouth State, which got a solid 32-save effort from sophomore goaltender Erik Shields (Lebanon, Maine) and both goals from newcomers making their Panther debuts. Munson had a goal and an assist for Nichols (3-0-1), and sophomore defenseman Colby Jones (Brockport, N.Y.) added two assists.
After a scoreless first period, freshman John Haley (Shelburne, Vt.) put the visitors on the board first with a power play goal four minutes into the second frame. PSU came back to knot the score a 1-1 with less than two minutes remaining in the middle period on a goal by freshman Kyle Tobin (Kanata, Ont.).
Plymouth State pulled ahead 2-1 five minutes into the third period on a goal by sophomore transfer Chris Cantara (Pelham, N.H.), but Munson got that back at the 9:27 mark, and it stayed 2-2 the rest of the way.
Shields stopped both shots he faced in overtime, while junior Keith Fink (Easton, Md.) finished with 29 saves for the Bison but didn't face any shots in the extra session.
PSU opens ECAC Northeast Conference play in its next outing, next Saturday, Nov. 17, at defending champion and pre-season favorite UMass Dartmouth (4:30 p.m.). Nichols will play a non-conference home game next Saturday against Stonehill College (8:30 p.m.)
