NEC nips PSU Men’s Ice Hockey in overtime

HENNIKER, N.H. - New England College's Mike Carmody (Falmouth, Maine) scored a power-play goal with just 2:01 remaining in overtime Tuesday evening to lift the Pilgrims past the visiting Plymouth State University Panthers, 6-5.  The win is the second straight for the Pilgrims, who improve to 9-2-1 overall, while the upset-minded Panthers drop to 4-7-2 overall.

The two teams battled through a quiet opening period before the Pilgrims broke the silence with two goals 10 seconds apart to go ahead 2-0. Carmody put the Pilgrims on the board first with his fourth goal of the season at the 15:55 mark and Brian Pouliot (Hooksett, N.H.) put the Pilgrims up 2-0 heading into the first intermission.

PSU didn't waste any time getting on the board in the second period as freshman Jason Butler (Farmington, Conn.) scored a power-play goal just 49 seconds into the period. PSU freshman Bryan Horrigan (Brookfield, Wisc.) knotted the game at 2-2 with a short-handed goal assisted by Deni Bojadzic (Gothenburg, Sweden) at the 4:04 mark.  NEC's Per Thunberg (Likoping, Sweden) struck late in the second period scoring his second goal of the season as the Pilgrims regained the lead heading into the third period, 3-2.

The Panthers took advantage of several Pilgrim penalties in the third period, scoring two power-play goals and tacking on another goal to go ahead of the NEC 5-3 with 10:32 remaining in regulation. Freshman David Rose (Haddon Township, N.J.) and Horrigan tallied the power play markers, and freshman Seth McQuade (Manchester, N.H.) added the fifth goal for the Panthers.

NEC would not go down without a fight as the Pilgrims scored at the 11:37 mark and then again at the 14:10 mark to send the game into overtime tied 5-5.  The Pilgrims took advantage of a Plymouth State penalty in overtime when Carmody completed the hat trick with his third goal for the game-winner.

Picking up the win in goal for NEC was Ron Baia (W. Haven, Conn.) who finished with 20 saves. In goal for Plymouth State was Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) who stopped 41 Pilgrim shots.

The Panthers will play all ECAC Northeast Conference games the rest of the season, beginning Saturday against Becker College at the Laconia (N.H.) Ice Arena (7:30 p.m.).  NEC plays a pair of weekend road games in Connecticut, Friday at Trinity (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday at Wesleyan (3:00 p.m.)
