Wentworth skates past PSU Mens Ice Hockey
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Wentworth Institute of Technology got goals from three different players Saturday evening and skated to a 3-1 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast Conference men's ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
Wentworth won its third game in a row to improve to 7-3-0 in conference play and 8-11-0 overall, while PSU had its three-game winning streak stopped, falling to 4-4-1 in the Northeast and 7-9-2 overall.
Sophomore Michael O'Brien (Royersford, Pa.) scored the only goal of the first period for Wentworth with less than two minutes remaining on the clock. Sophomore Jeff Olitch (Calgary, Alb.) extended the Leopards' lead to 2-0 with a goal at 8:46 of the middle frame.
The Panthers had a chance to get on the board midway through the second period, but PSU freshman Sean Buckley (Sagamore, Mass.) came up empty on a penalty shot. PSU did get on the board on a power play goal by freshman David Rose (Haddon Township, N.J.) at the 13:28 mark.
Wentworth added an insurance goal with four minutes remaining in the third period on a power play marker by freshman Jeff Fedyk (Calgary, Alb.) Wentworth was called for a penalty in the final two minutes of the game and PSU pulled its goalie for a two-skater advantage, but could not score.
Sophomore Justin Marriott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) earned the win in the Leopards goal with a 30-save effort. PSU senior Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) made a season-high 41 saves for the Panthers.
The Panthers will play their fourth straight home game Wednesday against league-leading Curry (6:00 p.m.) Wentworth is idle until hosting Salve Regina on Sunday, Feb. 10.
