Westfield State skates past PSU Men’s Ice Hockey

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore center Dennis Zak (Dover, N.J.) tallied two goals and an assist Saturday evening to lead Westfield State College to a 5-1 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast men's ice hockey game.

The Owls - a first-year varsity program - improved to 1-0-1. Plymouth State is 1-1-0 on the young season.

Zak assisted on Costi Hinn's goal that gave Westfield a 1-0 lead after the first period. Zak made the score 2-0 when he lifted the puck over the goalie's right shoulder from 15 feet out at the 9:13 mark.  It was 3-0 by the end of the middle period on a goal by Westfield's Benni Schennach at 18:19.

Westfield took a commanding 4-0 lead midway thru the third period before Plymouth got on the scoreboard on a goal by junior Chris Chambers (Crofton, Md.) at the 13:13 mark. Zak then scored with less then two minutes remaining in regulation.

Owl freshman goalie Ian Wilson played well between the pipes with 27 saves.

PSU returns home to prepare to the home opener next Saturday, Nov. 22, at Waterville Valley Ice Arena against UMass Dartmouth (6:00 p.m.)
