BOSTON, Mass. - Freshman defenseman Alan Dionne (North Scituate, R.I.) scored a goal and added a pair of assists Saturday night to help the Wentworth hockey team snap a three-game winless streak (0-2-1) with a 5-3 win over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast contest at Matthews Arena.
Plymouth State saw its seven-game unbeaten streak (5-0-2) come to an end and fell to 8-9-2 overall and 4-5-2 in league play. The win improves Wentworth's record to 9-7-1 overall and 6-3-1 in ECAC Northeast play.
Despite holding a 16-7 shot advantage in the first period, the Leopards would only muster one goal, which came when sophomore Casey Shade (Anchorage, Alaska) tallied from junior Jeff Olitch (Calgary, Alberta) and freshman Skylur Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.) at 14:17.
Wentworth scored two goals in the first 2:22 of the middle frame to take a 3-0 lead. Just 45 seconds into the period Olitch would score from Jameson and Dionne and Dionne would feed junior forward Michael O'Brien (Royersford, Pa.) to make it a 3-0 game. The Panthers got on the board with 8:09 left in the period when freshman Justin Phinney (Cleveland, Ohio) netted a power play goal, assisted by sophomores Seth McQuade (Manchester, N.H.) and classmate Chris Zaremba (Colorado Springs, Col.).
The Leopards maintained their two-goal advantage until Dionne scored what would hold up as the game winner on a feed from freshman Forrest Ellis (Pembroke, N.H.) at 13:22. However, the Panthers would make it a two-goal game with 2:26 remaining when sophomore Sean Buckley (Sagamore, Mass.) scored a power play goal, which was assisted by senior Chris Cantara (Pelham, N.H.) and senior Dave Dufresne (Dracut, Mass.).
Plymouth State pulled freshman netminder Allen Schneider (Strongsville, Ohio) for an extra attacker with one minute remaining in the game. However, just two seconds later Wentworth made it a 5-2 game when freshman Kyle Richardson (San Jose, Calif.) and O'Brien assisted on senior Joey Sides' (Sun Valley, Idaho) empty-net goal. The Panthers would pull back within two when junior Chris Chambers (Crofton, Md.) and sophomore Stephan Davis (Lafayette, Calif.) assisted on a goal by sophomore Bryan Horrigan (Brookfield, Wisc.) with 19.9 seconds left. That was as close as Plymouth State would get, as Wentworth was able to control the puck off the ensuing draw.
Junior Justin Marriott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) made 22 saves for the Leopards, while Schneider turned aside 39 shots for the Panthers. Wentworth held a 44-25 shot advantage.
The Leopards are at Becker Wednesday night, and the Panthers are at Curry Thursday night.
