WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Senior Kyle Cook (Chino Hills, Calif.) scored a hat trick Wednesday evening to lead Suffolk University to a 5-2 victory over Plymouth State University in ECAC Northeast Conference men's ice hockey action at Waterville Valley Arena.
Cook helped the Rams overcome a 2-0 deficit, scoring a pair of second period goals and finishing off his hat trick in the third period. He also assisted on an empty-net goal to complete a four-point night. Suffolk, which was tied with Plymouth State in the standings coming into the game, improved to 7-13-2 overall and 6-6-2 in the ECAC Northeast, while PSU fell to 9-11-2 and 5-7-2 in conference play.
The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, with sophomores Bryan Horrigan (Brookfield, Wis.) and Seth McQuade (Manchester, N.H.) scoring for the home team just a minute and a half apart. That would end up as all of the Panther scoring.
Cook scored his first goal for Suffolk at 4:45 of the second period, and tied the game with a power play goal at the 14:37 mark. Junior Mike Mondello (Revere, Mass.) tallied the eventual game-winner on the power play at 4:52 of the third period, and Cook added an insurance goal at 14:44. Junior Pat Welch (Dorchester, Mass.) rounded out the scoring with the empty-netter for the Rams. Cook now has a team-leading 13 goals and 26 points.
The Rams finished with a 27-24 advantage in shots on goal. Suffolk sophomore Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.) and PSU freshman Allen Schneider (Strongsville, Ohio) each finished with 22 saves.
PSU is home again on Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. face-off against Fitchburg State. Suffolk returns home to host league-leading Nichols College at 3:15 p.m.
