MARLBORO, Mass. - Sophomore Bryan Kriner (Newport, R.I.) and junior Andrew Stewart (O'Leary, PEI) scored two goals apiece Friday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Suffolk University in game one of the Becker College Ice Breaker Tournament at New England Sports Center.
Plymouth State trailed 4-2 midway through the second period but battled back for the win. The Panthers will play in the championship game Saturday at 5:10 p.m. against Stonehill College. Stonehill advanced to the title game with a 4-3 overtime win over Becker in the second game Friday. Suffolk will play Becker at 2:10 pm Saturday in the consolation game.
PSU took an early 1-0 lead when Stewart connected for his first goal of the year at the eight-minute mark. Junior Zach Barron (St. Louis, Mo.) tallied two goals in three minutes for the Rams to take a 2-1 lead with six minutes remaining in the first period. PSU got a late goal when Kriner put in a rebound off a JC Richard (Fort Collins, Colo.) shot from the point to make the score 2-2 at the first intermission.
Suffolk outscored Plymouth State in the second period. Niles Moore (Columbus, Ohio) and Pat Welch (Dorchester, Mass.) each picked up their first goals of the season to put the Rams up 4-2. Stewart got his second of the game at 15:18 to pull the Panthers to within a goal entering the third period.
Freshman Matt Aponte (Plano, Texas) scored his first collegiate goal for PSU at the 10-minute mark of the third period to tie the game at 4-4. Kriner picked up the game-winner just three minutes later.
Junior Erik Shields (Lebanon, Maine) made 24 saves for the win in the Panther goal. Jeff Rose (Collinsville, CT) had 29 saves for Suffolk in the loss.
