PSU Mens Hockey settles for tie against Worcester State
AUBURN, Mass. - Freshman defenseman Richie Zobak (Evergreen Park, Ill.) scored the game-tying goal midway through the third period Saturday evening as Plymouth State University and Worcester State College drew to a 2-2 tie in MASCAC men's ice hockey action at the Horgan Memorial Rink.
After a scoreless first period, the Lancers drew first blood at 3:45 of the second as junior Justin Brownstein (Wyncote, Pa.) opened the scoring with a power play goal. The Panthers responded 39 seconds later as junior David Rose (Haddonfield, N.J.) took advantage of a Panther power play with his fourth goal of the season.
Junior Billy O'Neill (Strafford, Pa.) gave the Lancers a 2-1 lead early on in the third when they had a 5-on-4 opportunity at 6:43. That set the stage for Zobak who knotted the score at 10:16 with some help from junior Andrew Stewart (O'Leary, PEI) and classmate Sean Buckley (Sagamore Beach, Mass.)
The Panthers out-shot WSC 16-9 from the third stanza on, including a 6-0 lead in the extra session. PSU had defeated the Lancers 4-1 and 7-1 earlier this season. Plymouth State moves to 12-7-1 overall and 8-4-1 in the conference, while Worcester State is now 5-11-2 and 3-8-2 in the MASCAC.
Freshman Zach Hansen (Dexter, Mich.) recorded his second straight tie for the Lancers as he stopped 36 of the 38 shots while senior Aaron Runner (Alpharetta, Ga.) collected 25 saves for the visitors.
The Lancers continue their season on the road Thursday at Assumption at 7:35 p.m. while Plymouth State will face off at Salem State on the same day at 7 p.m.
