PSU Mens Hockey player receives top weekly honor
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - One of the top freshmen on the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team was recognized Monday with the top weekly honor from the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC).
Freshman Alex Cottle (West Chester, Pa.) was named MASCAC Player of the Week after leading the Panthers to a victory in their only game of the week. Cottle was recognized by the MASCAC for the second time this season, having been a weekly honor roll selection once last month.
A 5'10", 170-pound forward, Cottle (right) recorded five points on three goals and two assists in PSU's 8-5 victory at Framingham State on Saturday night. His first two goals gave PSU leads (1-0 and 3-2) and his final goal was PSU's seventh and provided a third-period cushion. He also assisted on PSU's fourth and fifth goals after Framingham came back to tie the score at 3-3.
Plymouth State, 15-7-1 overall and 11-4-1 in the MASCAC, is in third place in the conference, one point behind Salem State and two points ahead of Westfield State. The Panthers, 9-1-1 in their last 11, wrap up the regular season with a pair of conference games this week, Thursday at home for Senior Night against league-leading Fitchburg State (6:00 p.m.) and Saturday at Westfield State (5:35 p.m.).
The MASCAC Tournament begins next Tuesday, Mar. 2, with the top two teams receiving first round byes and the third and fourth place teams hosting the sixth and fifth place teams, respectively. The semifinals are Thursday, Mar. 4 at the site of the top two teams, and the championship contest is slated for Saturday, Mar. 6, at the site of the highest remaining team.
