PSU Men’s Hockey nips Fitchburg State
FITCHBURG, Mass. – Freshman Kyle Greco (Hillside, IL) scored a first-period goal and sophomore goaltender Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden) stopped all 23 shots he faced Thursday night as Plymouth State University defeated Fitchburg State University, 1-0, in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men’s ice hockey action.
PSU extended its unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2), improving to 4-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in MASCAC games. Fitchburg State dropped its second straight and fell to 4-3-0 overall and 2-3-0 in conference play.
Greco scored what would end up as the only goal of the game with 1:35 remaining in the first period, assisted by sophomores Alex Cottle (West Chester, Pa.) and Tim Visich (Mount Pleasant, Mich.).
Astedt did the rest, making 10 of his 23 saves in the third period and fending off six Falcon power play opportunities for his second shutout of the season. Junior goaltender Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y.) was nearly as perfect at the other end for Fitchburg, finishing with 32 saves as Plymouth State had a 33-23 advantage in shots on goal.
Plymouth State returns home to host Westfield State on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Hanaway Rink, while Fitchburg State is home again on Sunday against UMass Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.)
