PSU Men’s Ice Hockey rallies past Stonehill
Aponte's OT goal lifts Panthers
FOXBORO, Mass. – Junior Matt Aponte potted the game-winning goal just 24 seconds into overtime Thursday night as Plymouth State University came from behind to defeat Stonehill College, 4-3, in non-conference men's ice hockey action at the Foxboro Sports Center.
PSU trailed most of the third period before junior Seth Phelan tied the score at 3-3 with 2:48 remaining in regulation, and then assisted on Aponte's game-winner. The Panthers also received first-period goals from junior tansfers Larry Kincaid and Phil Moore.
Senior Patrick Greene tallied a goal and an assist for the Skyhawks while Fabio Cuetara and Bill Carey added goals.
Plymouth State opened up the scoring at 6:24 of the first as Kincaid one-timed a feed from Aponte for an early 1-0 lead. Moore made it 2-0 at 7:02 blasting a shot from the blue line into the top left corner of the net for his first tally of the season.
Stonehill responded with goals in the second period from Cuetara and Carey to even the score at 2-2. Cuetara found the back of the net at 6:55 stuffing home sophomore Garrett Lessard's rebound and Carey tied up the contest at 9:05 on the power play firing a shot top-shelf after corralling Greene's rebound that ricocheted off the end boards directly in the slot.
Greene gave the Skyhawks their first lead of the night at 2:51 of the third, sniping a shot from the goal line for a 3-2 advantage. Stonehill held the lead until 17:12 of the period when Phelan finished on a one-timer in the slot on assists by Aponte and Kincaid.
Stonehill goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos forced the eventual overtime session at 18:12, robbing senior Chris Zaremba with a left pad save on a penalty shot attempt.
Aponte wasted little time in the extra session, drilling home Kincaid's rebound in front of the net for his first game-winner of the season.
Panthers netminder Jack Astedt turned away 32 shots, including a game-high 13 in the third period, while Tasiopoulos finished with 31 saves.
Plymouth State (2-0-0) will host Westfield State University next Tuesday, Nov. 15, in the home opener at Hanaway Rink (6:00 p.m.) Stonehill (0-4-0) travels to Nichols College in non-conference action on Saturday.
