Aponte, Astedt named Players of the Week for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The first round of winter weekly honors from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) were announced Monday and two Plymouth State University men's ice hockey players topped the list.
Junior Matt Aponte (Plano, Texas) was named MASCAC Men's Ice Hockey Player of the Week, and junior Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden) was named MASCAC Goalie of the Week. The two helped the Panthers get off to a 2-0 start to the season with non-conference victories over Southern New Hampshire University and Stonehill College.
A 6'1", 175-pound netminder, Astedt backstopped the Panthers to their two wins, recording a 1.50 goals against average and a .929 saves percentage with one shutout. He made seven saves in posting his fourth career shutout in the season-opening win against SNHU and stopped 32 shots in the overtime triumph over Stonehill. Astest was Second Team All-Conference last season after being named Goalie of the Week three times during the season.
A 5'11", 190-pound forward, Aponte recorded two goals and two assists in the two games; he tallied one goal in the win over Southern New Hampshire, and posted a goal and two assists in the victory over Stonehill. Aponte assisted on the Panther goal against Stonehill with 2:48 left in regulation that tied the game, and then scored the game-winner 24 seconds into overtime.
Plymouth State opens MASCAC play this week with a pair of home games at Hanaway Rink – Tuesday against Westfield State University and Thursday vs. Framingham State University, both games at 6:00 p.m.
