Panthers remain atop MASCAC standings
SALEM, Mass. – Junior Kyle Greco scored two goals, including the game-winner, Thursday evening as Plymouth State University defeated Salem State University, 3-2, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's hockey game at Rockett Arena.
The Panthers, 6-1-0 overall, remain undefeated in conference play (3-0-0) while Salem State drops to 3-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in MASCAC games.
Both teams got off to a quick start in the first period as the Vikings' Nick Lampson scored on a breakaway goal just 1:56 into the game, and 22 seconds later the Panthers countered when Travis Stevens poked a loose puck in the crease into the back of the Vikings' net.
The Panthers opened up a 3-1 lead in the second period with two goals scored by Greco. His first came unassisted 4:35 into the period, while his second score had help from Brian Johnson and Phil Arnone.
PSU killed off a five-minute major penalty later in the second period but Salem State's Giancarlo Capodanno salvaged another opportunity when he rifled in a power-play goal with just 1:08 left in the period. The goal cut the lead to 3-2 as the teams headed into the third period.
Both sides played a scoreless third period. Despite many opportunities, including seven power-play chances for the game, the Vikings could not capitalize and suffered a 3-2 defeat.
Salem State finished with a 39-29 advantage in shots on goal. PSU junior Jack Astedt, who came into the game as the MASCAC's top goalie with a 1.50 conference goals against average, again played a solid game with 37 saves in the win. The Vikings' Ryan Sutliffe made 26 saves.
Both teams play conference road games on Saturday, Salem State visiting Westfield State and Plymouth State traveling to Worcester State.
