Panthers to host Worcester State Tuesday at Hanaway Rink
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The stage is now set for the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey semifinals this Tuesday, Feb. 28, as top-seeded Plymouth State University and #2-seeded Salem State University are set to host home games.
The Panthers will host fifth-seeded Worcester State University Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at Hanaway Rink in one semifinal, while the Vikings will face third-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m. in Salem, Mass. The two semifinal winners will face off for the MASCAC championship this Saturday,, Mar. 3, at the highest remaining seed, with the winner receiving the conference's first automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championships.
A capacity crowd is expected at Hanaway Rink for the PSU-Worcester State contest. Tickets are priced at $5 for the public. Live webstreaming and live stats will be available on the Plymouth State website at athletics.plymouth.edu.
PSU, 15-6-3 overall, received a first-round bye on Saturday after capturing the MASCAC regular season title with a 12-3-3 mark. Worcester State, 9-14-3 overall, finished fifth in the regular season with a 5-11-2 conference mark, and pulled off a 4-1 upset victory over fourth-seeded Fitchburg State University in last Saturday's quarterfinal.
Tuesday's meeting between PSU and Worcester State will be the fourth match-up between the two schools this season, with each team posting a win, a loss and a tie, and all three have gone to overtime. WSU took the first meeting (3-2) in Worcester on Dec. 3; the teams tied (3-3) in Plymouth on Jan. 21; and PSU rallied for a 5-4 win in Worcester on Feb. 16.
The Panthers are hoping to capitalize on the home-ice advantage; PSU has an 8-3-1 record at Hanaway Rink this season, and owns a 19-6-2 mark at home since the building opened in 2010.
