PSU Men’s Hockey powers past UMass Dartmouth

Stevens leads Panthers into first place in MASCAC

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Freshman Zach Fox (Sandown, N.H.) scored two goals Thursday evening as Plymouth State University took over first place in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) with an impressive 5-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at the Stephan Hetland Arena.

The Panthers (6-1 overall), defending MASCAC champs, won their fifth straight game and handed the Corsairs (4-2-2 overall) their first conference loss of the season.  PSU tops the MASCAC with a 4-1 mark while UMD and Salem State are tied for second, both at 3-1-1. Senior goalie Jack Astedt (Angelholn, Sweden) made 39 stops for the Panthers to key the victory.

PSU didn't waste any time getting on the board as senior Richie Zobak (Evergreen Park, Ill.) opened the scoring just 32 seconds into play as he finished in the top corner off a nice drop pass by Stevens. Sophomore Mike Freitag (Westmont, Ill.) scored the eventual game-winner for PSU five minutes later on the power play.

Freshman Swann Boisvert (Blainville, Que.) put the Corsairs on the board when he scored off a pass from sophomore Steve Ginand (Milford, Mass.) at the 10:59 mark of the first period. The Panthers answered back on the power play minutes later when Fox scored his first of the night from seniors Alex Cottle (West Chester, Pa.) and Kyle Greco (Hillside, Ill.), giving PSU a 3-1 lead after one.

The Panthers added a pair of goals in the second period to stretch their lead to 5-1 as junior Travis Stevens (Montclair, Calif.) scored 15 seconds into the frame and Fox added his second of the night , again from Greco and Cottle, at the 16:22 mark. The two squads wrapped up the game with a scoreless third period.

PSU outshot the Corsairs, 45-40. Senior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, Ont.) made 29 saves through two periods for the Corsairs, while junior Ben Vandervies (Hanna, Alb.) made 11 in the third.

Both teams play MASCAC games on Saturday as the Corsairs visit Framingham State and the Panthers host Fitchburg State on Salute the Troops Night at Hanaway Rink.
