PSU Men’s Hockey blanks Fitchburg for sixth straight win

Ingerson posts shutout; Freitag nets game-winner

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior goaltender Tyler Ingerson (Concord, N.H.) stopped 35 shots, including 14 in the third period, and sophomore Mike Freitag (Westmont, Ill.) scored the only goal of the game as Plymouth State University blanked Fitchburg State University, 1-0, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey contest at Hanaway Rink.

The Falcons outshot the host Panthers 35-22, including 12-5 in the second period and 14-6 in the third, but Ingerson was the difference. He improved to 3-0 on the season with his first shutout and the third of his career.  The Panthers posted their sixth consecutive victory to improve to 7-1 overall, and remain atop the MASCAC with a 5-1 mark.  Fitchburg State slipped to 4-5-1 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play.

Junior Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn.) was nearly as strong in the Fitchburg State goal, making 21 saves, but suffered a tough-luck loss.

Freitag's game-winner came in the final minute of the second period, as he received a drop pass from senior Kyle Greco (Hillside, Ill.) near the right face-off circle and snapped a shot past Wolcott just inside the left goalpost.

The Panthers killed off two Falcon power plays in the third period, including one in the final minute when Fitchburg pulled its goalie and skated 6-on-4.

PSU wraps up the semester next Saturday with a non-conference game vs. Southern New Hampshire University (2:00 p.m.), which will be Salute the Troops Day at Hanaway Rink.  Fitchburg State has completed play for the semester and plays again at the Codfish Bowl Tournament at UMass Boston on Jan. 5-6, 2013.
