MASCAC honors continue for PSU Men’s Hockey players
Freitag, Astedt named Player, Goalie/Week for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The list of weekly honors for Plymouth State University men's ice hockey players grew by two on Monday when the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) announced its Player and Goalie of the Week.
Panther sophomore Mike Freitag (Westmont, Ill.) was named the MASCAC Men's Ice Hockey Player of the Week and senior Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden) was selected Goalie of the Week. They led the first-place Panthers to a pair of MASCAC wins, extending the team's winning streak to six games.
A 5'6", 160-pound forward, Freitag scored two game-winning goals and added one assist in PSU's 2-0 week. He assisted on PSU's first goal and scored the second, which turned out to be the game-winner, in Thursday's 5-1 win at UMass Dartmouth, and he scored the only goal of the game in Saturday's 1-0 win over Fitchburg State.
Freitag has taken over the team scoring lead with three goals and nine assists for 12 points in eight games. He is tied for the MASCAC lead in assists and tied for fourth in points.
A 6'1", 175-pound goalie, Astedt made a season-high 39 saves in Thursday's 5-1 win at UMass Dartmouth, including 15 stops in the second period and 17 in the third. He helped PSU kill off five Corsair power play attempts, including three in the final 20 minutes. Astedt was on the MASCAC Weekly Honor Roll last week.
Astedt is now tied for third in the MASCAC in goals against average (2.37), tied for fourth in save percentage (.923) and second in winning percentage (.800, 4-1-0).
Plymouth State, 7-1-0 overall and 5-1-0 in conference games, wraps up the semester this Saturday with a non-conference game vs. Southern New Hampshire University (2:00 p.m.), which will be Salute the Troops Day at Hanaway Rink.
