Westfield State rallies past PSU Men’s Ice Hockey

Cottle, Greco approaching 100 for Panthers

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore TJ Powers (East Greenwich, R.I.) scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in the third period Thursday evening to lead Westfield State University to a 6-4 comeback victory over Plymouth State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey showdown.

The streaking Owls overcame a 4-2 deficit and ran their unbeaten streak to six straight, moving into sole possession of second place with a 8-4-1 MASCAC mark; they are 12-6-1 overall. Plymouth State remains in first place with a 10-3 record; the Panthers are 14-6 overall.

The teams split the previous two games by identical overtime scores of 3-2, and the third and deciding game of the regular season series was a physical back-and-forth contest with four lead changes.

Plymouth State struck first 2:18 into the game on a goal by Kyle Weiland (Hampden, Maine), but Westfield led after the first period on a power play goal by Lucas Romero and the first of two goals by Dalton Jay.

The Panthers evened the score 32 seconds into the second stanza on a power play goal  by sophomore defenseman Zach Sarig (Reading, Pa.), his first of two goals in the rally. PSU added two goals in less than two minutes midway through the period to take a 4-2 lead as senior Kyle Greco (Hillside, Ill.) scored for his 97th career point followed by Sarig's second goal. Senior Alex Cottle (West Chester, Pa.) assisted on Greco's goal and Cottle now has 99 career points.

Westfield closed within a goal, 4-3, on a power play goal from Jay with just under four minutes remaining in the second period.

Powers then poked in two goals in front of the net in the third period to send the large crowd into a frenzy. The game-tying goal came on a power play. Powers flicked the game-winner just between the goalie pads and the puck trickled across the goal line for a 5-4 Owl lead with 6:48 remaining.

Westfield's Rory Wilkowich added an empty net goal with 16 seconds remaining.

Plymouth outshot Westfield, 47-41. Owl goal Ian Perrier registered 43 saves. PSU netminder Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden) had 35 stops.

Both teams play MASCAC road games on Saturday, Plymouth State traveling to Framingham State and Westfield State visiting Worcester State.
