PSU Men’s Hockey blanks Salem State

Astedt, Wigg lead Panthers to season sweep of Vikings

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior goaltender Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden) made 28 saves to record his school-record eighth career shutout Monday evening as Plymouth State University blanked Salem State University, 3-0, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey contest at Hanaway Rink.

Freshman Andrew Wigg (Lantz, N.S.) led the Panthers with a pair of goals and an assist, including the game-winner and an empty-netter, while senior Alex Cottle (West Chester, Pa.) collected two assists to move into second place on PSU's career assist list.

Playing for the first time in nine days, PSU completed the three-game season sweep over the rival Vikings. The Panthers improve to 16-6-0 overall and remain in first place in the MASCAC with a 12-3-0 mark.  Junior Ryan Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev.) made 25 saves for the Vikings but Salem State dropped to 10-11-1 overall and 7-7-1 in conference play.

Wigg scored the only goal of the first period for PSU on an odd-man rush, which turned out to be the game-winner.  Cottle passed the puck from the right side of the offensive zone to Wigg in the slot, and Wigg snapped a wrister past the goalie for a 1-0 Panther lead with a minute to go in the first period.

It stayed a 1-0 game through the second period and into the middle of the third, when senior defenseman JC Richardson (Fort Collins, Colo.) doubled the Panther lead.  He took a cross-ice pass from Cottle at the top of the right face-off circle and beat the goalie just inside the post.

Wigg closed out the scoring with 46 seconds remaining, stealing the puck at center ice and dumping it into the empty Viking net for his eighth of the season.

Cottle increased his career assist total to 76, moving past Rory Nickerson (74 assists from 2002-06) and PSU Athletic Hall of Famer Duncan Walsh (75 assists from 1982-86). Cottle trails only all-time leader Kevin Craig, who recorded 106 assists from 1984-88.

Both teams play MASCAC home games on Thursday as PSU hosts Worcester State University and Salem State entertains Westfield State University.
