PSU Men’s Ice Hockey holds off Stonehill
Panthers record first win of season
FOXBORO, Mass. – The Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team picked up its first win of the season Thursday evening with a 3-2 decision over Stonehill College in non-conference action at the Foxboro Sports Center.
The Panthers (1-1) out-shot the Skyhawks by a 45-26 count but had to settle for the one-goal win. Junior defenseman Zach Sarig (Wyomissing, Pa.) scored what turned out to be the game-winner at the 7:28 mark of the final period. Freshmen Dan Dupell (Collegeville, Pa.) and Ian McGilvrey (Omaha, Neb.) also scored goals for PSU and senior goaltender Tyler Ingerson (Concord, N.H.) made 24 saves to earn the win.
PSU got out to a first-period lead at the 12:30 mark as Dupell scored with the help of assists from sophomore Tieg Alward (Vail, Colo.) and freshman Ryan Callahan (Londonderry, N.H.). Stonehill responded just under five minutes later when sophomore Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y.) scored and the game went into the first intermission tied at 1-all.
The Panthers regained the advantage when McGilvrey scored 12 minutes into the second, and then the Panthers gave themselves a two-goal cushion with Sarig's goal 7:28 into the third.
Stonehill attempted a comeback, sparked by Balsamo's first of the season with only 4:12 left in the contest, but Ingerson was able to keep every shot in front of him the rest of the way.
Plymouth State will hit the road this Saturday for a non-conference test at Southern New Hampshire University. Stonehill (1-2) returns to the ice next Wednesday when the Skyhawks host Northeast-10 foe Assumption College at the Foxboro Sports Center.
