Wigg, Sarig power Panthers to MASCAC win
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Andrew Wigg (Lantz, N.S.) scored two goals and junior Zach Sarig (Reading, Pa.) added a goal and two assists Thursday evening as Plymouth State University doubled up Fitchburg State University, 6-3, in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink.
The two teams were tied 2-2 entering the third period when PSU scored twice in the first minute of the period to open up a 4-2 lead. Freshman Baxter Strachan (Sioux City, Iowa) followed with his first career goal for PSU with 7:42 to play, and after a Fitchburg State goal by sophomore Kevin Holmes (Newburyport, Mass.) with five and a half minutes to play, Wigg sealed the win with an empty net goal with a minute to play.
PSU records its first conference win of the season, moving to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the MASCAC while Fitchburg State drops to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The visitors got on the board first with a power play goal less than three minutes into the game as sophomore John Celi (Leominster, Mass.) converted with the man-advantage with assists from junior Craig Halpin (Irvington, N.Y.) and Ryan Connolly (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.)
The Panthers evened the score four minutes later when Wigg knocked in a rebound after Falcon junior goalie Dan Finn (Fitchburg, Mass.) had made a stop on a slapshot by Sarig. PSU pulled ahead when freshman Ian McGilvrey (Omaha, Neb.) deflected another slap shot by Sarig from the top of the offensive zone with five minutes to go in the first period.
PSU maintained the 2-1 lead until Fitchburg State tied the game with eight minutes to go in the second frame. Connolly finished off the play with a backhander after some nice passing between linemates Sean Loebs (Cresskill, N.J.) and Ryan Bedard (Derby Line, Vt.).
The Panthers exploded out of the locker room to start the third period. Sarig fired in his MASCAC-leading sixth goal of the season with a slapper from the right boards 19 seconds in, and junior Mike Freitag (Westmont, Ill.) followed with his first goal of the season on a shot from the slot 20 seconds later. Strachan extended the Panthers lead after being sent in on a partial breakaway from a nice pass from freshman Mike Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.)
Senior goalie Tyler Ingerson (Concord, N.H.) made 26 saves to earn the win in the Panther goal. Finn finished with 30 saves in the Falcon goal as PSU finished with a 36-29 advantage in shots.
PSU hits the road for another MASCAC game Saturday at UMass Dartmouth, while Fitchburg State visits Westfield State Saturday for a conference encounter.
