PSU Men’s Ice Hockey upended by Milwaukee SOE
Walters scores lone goal on power play for Panthers
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Freshman Gage Christianson and senior Steven Shaffroth each scored a goal and assisted on another Saturday afternoon to lead the Milwaukee Schools of Engineering (MSOE) men's ice hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Plymouth State University in the consolation game of the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament at Kreitzberg Arena, hosted by Norwich University.
The Raiders (2-11) rebounded from a loss to the nationally-ranked host Cadets Friday to jump ahead early on the Panthers (4-8), scoring goals in each of the first two periods, and then hold on for third place in the tournament.
Senior Dave Walters (Ottawa, Ont.) tallied a power play goal for PSU seven minutes into the third period to cut the margin to 2-1, but Shaffroth answered for MSOE with a power play goal of his own to give the Raiders their two-goal lead back.
Christianson got MSOE on the board just 5:09 into the game, scoring off assists from seniors West Bauman and Shaffroth. Freshman Brandon Unser then doubled the team's lead with a power play goal at 7:11 of the second period, assisted by sophomore Casey Moneer.
Freshman Austin Campbell made 14 saves for his first collegiate win for MSOE. His counterpart, sophomore Gordon Ceasar (Oak Park, Calif.), stopped 30 shots as the Raiders held a strong 33-15 shot advantage.
PSU is back on the ice Thursday with a non-conference game at Wentworth. The Raiders return to action Friday, traveling to the Minneapolis to play Augsburg. They will then stay in Minnesota to take on St. Mary's Saturday in Winona.
