Third-period eruption lifts Panthers to MASCAC win
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Andrew Wigg (Lantz, N.S.) tallied two goals and two assists on Saturday evening and Plymouth State University snapped a 2-2 tie with four third-period goals in a 6-2 victory over Westfield State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey action.
Plymouth and Westfield are now tied for second place in the MASCAC with 7-5 conference records. The Panthers are 9-10 overall while Westfield drops to 8-11.
Wigg opened the scoring with two seconds remaining in the first period. Plymouth took a 2-0 lead midway through the second stanza on a power play goal from freshman Ian McGilvrey (Omaha, Neb.)
Westfield, which was outshot by a whopping, 48-22, played its best in the final five minutes of the second period when Frank Zuccaro and Dan Loughlin lit the lamp to knot the score at 2-2.
But Plymouth completely dominated the third period, outshooting Westfield, 18-4, while scoring its four goals. Junior Zach Sarig (Reading, Pa.) scored the game-winning goal 26 seconds into period on a power play. The Panthers took a 4-2 lead four minutes later on a goal by junior Chad Barthelmess (Norristown, Pa.) while both teams were down a player because of penalties. Wigg lit the lamp for the second time midway through the third period and freshman Mike Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.) scored with 3:54 remaining to round out the scoring.
Sophomore goalie Gordon Ceasar (Oak Park, CA) made 20 saves to earn the win in the Panther goal. Eddie Davey made 42 saves for the Owls.
PSU plays a pair of MASCAC home games next week, hosting Salem State on Thursday and Fitchburg State on Saturday.
