PSU Men’s Ice Hockey edges Salem State in MASCAC opener

McGilvrey scores third-period game-winner for Panthers

SALEM, Mass. – Sophomore Ian McGilvrey (Omaha, Neb) knocked home a loose puck with 11:00 minutes remaining in the third to lift the Plymouth State Panthers over the Salem State Vikings 3-2 at Rockett Arena on Thursday evening in the MASCAC opener for both squads. Salem State takes their first loss while Plymouth State improves to 1-2 and 1-0 in conference.

The Panthers jumped on top early when Mike Freitag (Westmont, IL) shot the puck stick side past Vikings' goalie  Marcus Zelzer (Green Bay, WI) on assists from Andrew Wigg (Lantz, NS) and Josh Woody (Sunderland, MD).  Plymouth State made it 2-0 at the 11:11 mark on a power-play goal by Zach Sarig (Reading, PA), assisted by McGilvrey.  Chris Mastropietro (Revere, MA) put the Vikings on the board when he came down the right side and scored unassisted at the 14:04 mark to make the score 2-1 after one period of play. The Panthers dominated the puck in the first, outshooting Salem State 16-7.

In the second period the Vikings' John Needham (Medford, MA) had a breakaway opportunity and Kristofer Faric (Witby, ON) had a shot in front of the net, but the Panthers' Gordon Ceasar (Oak Park, CA) stuffed both chances to keep the period scoreless.

At 2:46 into third period, Salem State's Andrew Bucci (Peabody, MA) made it a 2-2 game with a snipe from the blue line.  That score held up until McGilvrey jumped on a loose puck under the goalies pads and lifted it into the back of the net for the game-winner.

Zelzer (Green Bay, WI) had 27 saves for the Vikings while Ceasar stopped 23 shots for the Panthers. Plymouth State held a 30-25 advantage in shots.

Salem State's next game is away at Westfield State next Thursday at 7:35 PM. Plymouth State will also travel next Thursday to Fitchburg State for a 7:00 PM puck-drop.
