Special teams boost Panthers to MASCAC win
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Plymouth State University capitalized on a pair of special teams goals Saturday evening to defeat Framingham State University, 2-1, in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey action at Loring Arena.
The regular season champion Panthers won for the seventh time in their last eight games, improving to 13-8-3 overall (13-3-1 MASCAC) while the Rams fall to 6-15-2 overall (5-11-1 MASCAC). PSU sweeps the season series against Framingham, having defeated the Rams 5-4 (OT) and 12-2 earlier this season.
The Rams opened up scoring late in the first period when Tyler Colacchio (Bellingham) beat the Panthers goalie over his right shoulder for a 1-0 lead. Jay Nicholls (Middleton, Mass.) was credited with the assist on the play.
The Panthers utilized their special teams to score their two goals. Just over halfway through the second frame senior Zach Sarig (Reading, Pa,) scored a shorthanded goal with an assist from freshman Chris Zuccaro (Hudson, N.H.) to knot the game at 1-1. With just over a minute to play the Panthers took advantage of a power-play when junior Josh Woody (Sunderland, Md.) scored the eventual game-winner with help from sophomore Ian McGilvrey (Omaha, Neb.) & Sarig.
Junior goalie Gordon Ceasar (Oak Park, Calif.) made 22 stops for PSU for his 12th win of the season. Rams goalie Alessio Muggli (Rueti, Switzerland) turned away 41 Panthers shots in the loss.
PSU wraps up the regular season Tuesday at Hanaway Rink, hosting Westfield State University at 6:00 p.m. The Rams will travel to Worcester State on Thursday to close the regular season. The game will be played at Hart Recreation Center on the campus of Holy Cross. The Rams are currently tied in points with Worcester State in the MASCAC standings for the final playoff spot.
