Two goals by McGilvrey sparks Panthers to victory
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Ian McGilvrey (Omaha, Neb.) scored a pair of third-period goals Saturday evening as the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team defeated Becker College, 5-3, in the season opener for both teams at Hanaway Rink.
The teams combined for six of the eight goals in the third period. Tied 1-1 entering the frame, PSU junior Dan Dupell (Collegeville, Pa.) and Becker freshman Brandon Morgan (Rochester, N.Y.) traded power play goals to make it 2-2 with 12 minutes to play. PSU took control with three goals in a span of less than three minutes, including two from McGilvrey and one from senior Josh Woody (Sunderland, Md.), the second by McGilvrey coming with just 3:09 to play.
Junior Conner Allison (Hillsboro, Ore.) tacked on a power play goal for Becker with less than two minutes on the clock to round out the scoring.
PSU freshmen Colby Lanceleve (Stewiacke, N.S.) and Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.) collected two points apiece in their collegiate debuts, Lanceleve with a goal and an assist and Volonnino with two assists. Senior goalie Gordon Ceasar (Oak Park, Calif.) earned the win with a 25-save effort.
Morgan and junior Gerald Owen (Chesapeake, Va.) tallied two points each for the Hawks, Morgan with a goal and an assist and Owen with two assists. Junior Tyler Stepke (Mars, Pa.) made 43 saves in an impressive effort in the Becker goal.
PSU is back in action next Saturday at Hanaway Rink with a 6:00 p.m. face-off against Stonehill College. Becker plays again Thursday at 6:45 p.m. at Johnson & Wales.
