Lanceleve scores lone goal for Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman goalie William Palmer (Cranston, R.I.) made 35 saves Saturday evening as Stonehill College defeated Plymouth State University, 3-1, in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink.

Senior Thomas DePaolo (Mendham, N.J.) scored the only goal of the first period for the visitors with four minutes remaining, cutting to the middle of the ice and snapping a shot through the pads of PSU freshman goalie Evan Morelli (Reading, Mass.) for his first goal of the young season.

The teams traded goals just 43 seconds apart late in the second period. Senior Tom Jenkins (Canton, Mass.) gathered the puck after a shot by junior Evan Jacques (Norton, Mass.) was blocked, and Jenkins scored his second of the year at 14:47 to make it a two-goal game. Freshman Colby Lanceleve (Stewiacke, N.S.) answered for PSU at the 15:30 mark with his second of the season, pounding home a rebound after Palmer stopped shots by junior Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and freshman Cam Cundy (Portsmouth, N.H.).

That turned out to be the extend of the scoring until sophomore Tommy Newton (Hollis, N.H.) scored an empty-netter with 13 seconds remaining in the final frame.

PSU out-shot the Skyhawks in each period and finished with a 36-19 margin for the game. Morelli finished with 16 saves in the Panther net.

Plymouth State, 1-1-0, plays its Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) opener Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at Hanaway Rink against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Stonehill, 2-0-1, visits Nichols College Wednesday at 8:10 p.m for another non-conference match-up.
