PSU Men’s Ice Hockey rallies past UMD in MASCAC opener

Volonnino scores twice for Panthers in comeback win

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.) scored two goals Wednesday evening as Plymouth State University rallied to a 4-2 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink.

            The visiting Corsairs tallied the first two goals of the game, but PSU tied the score by the end of the second period and potted the game-winner in the middle of the third before adding an empty-netter. PSU is now 2-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play while UMD is 0-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the MASCAC.

            PSU peppered the Corsair net with 54 shots, out-shooting the visitors 54-26. Senior goalie Gordon Ceasar (Oak Park, Calif.) made 24 saves to earn the win for the Panthers, while sophomore Drew Michals (Newton, Mass.) was good for 50 stops at the other end in the loss.

            Sophomore Casey Shea (Woburn, Mass.) scored the only goal of the first period for the Corsairs at 6:39 during a 4-on-4 situation, his second of the season. The visitors extended their lead just 45 seconds into the second period on a power play goal by sophomore Mike Sones (Waterdown, Ont.)

            Senior Andrew Wigg (Lantz, N.S.), last year's MASCAC Player of the Year, potted his first of the season to put the Panthers on the scoreboard at the 9:07 mark of the second period, and Volonnino evened the score with his first of the season at 13:56.

            PSU sophomore Chris Zuccaro (Hudson, N.H.) scored the game-winner for PSU win a power play goal at 11:07 of the third frame, assisted by junior Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Dan Dupell (Collegeville, Pa.). Volonnino sealed the win with an empty-netter with 46 seconds remaining, as junior Tord Thoresen (Oppegard, Norway) picked up his second assist of the night.

            Both teams are back in action Saturday with MASCAC games as PSU visits Salem State University for a 2:00 p.m. face-off and UMD travels to Westfield State University for a 5:35 p.m. start.
