Economos and Woody post hat tricks for Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and senior Josh Woody (Sunderland, Md.) each recorded hat tricks Thursday evening as Plymouth State University skated past Framingham State University, 9-2, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink.

Woody added an assist to his total for a four-point night, while senior Andrew Wigg (Lantz, N.S.) and junior Tommy Dowell (Olathe, Kans.) also collected four points with four assists apiece. The Panthers defeated the Rams for the sixth straight time, improving to 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in MASCAC games.

Down 5-0 early in the second period, Framingham tallied consecutive goals to get back in the game, but PSU outscored the visitors 4-0 in the final period to seal the win. Framingham State falls to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in MASCAC contests.

PSU got on the board just 39 seconds into the game when a shot by Dowell went off Economos' skate in front for a 1-0 lead. Junior Dan Dupell (Collegeville, Pa.) scored on a feed from freshman Matt Volonnino (Hacketstown, N.J.) five minutes later to make it 2-0, and freshman Colby Lanceleve (Stewiacke, N.S.) found the net on a give-and-go from Wigg less than two minutes after tha to push the lead to 3-0. Economos notched his second of the game on a shot from the right circle with six minutes on the clock on a play set up by junior Tord Thoresen (Oppegard, Norway) for a 4-0 lead after one period.

Volonnino snapped a shot from the left circle on a Panther power play five minutes into the second period for a five-goal lead. The visitors showed some life with consecutive goals less than four minutes apart late in the period as freshman Jake McKinnon (Framingham, Mass.) snapped a wrist shot through the goalie's pads for his fifth goal of the season, and junior Mark Essery (Rockfall, Conn.) brought the Rams to within 5-2 at the end of the middle frame.

The Panthers poured it on in the third period. Woody tallied power play goals at 1:36 and 11:48 before Economos finished off his hat trick at 15:38 and Woody did the same at 17:16. PSU finished 3-for-4 on the power play and out-shot the Rams, 36-22.

Senior goalie Gordon Ceasar (Oak Park, Calif.) remained undefeated on the season (4-0-0), making 20 saves. Junior Alessio Muggli (Rueti, Switzerland) and freshman Adam Calabrese (Philadelphia, Pa.) combined for 27 saves in the Rams net.

Both teams are back on the ice Saturday with MASCAC road games as PSU visits Fitchburg State University (4:00 p.m.) and Framingham State travels to Westfield State University (5:35 p.m.).
