Woody scores game-winner as Panthers remain unbeaten in MASCAC
FITCHBURG, Mass. – Senior Josh Woody (Sunderland, Md.) scored the game-winning goal with 3:05 remaining in regulation Saturday afternoon to lift Plymouth State University to a 3-2 victory over Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Wallace Civic Center.
Plymouth State won its fourth straight game to improve to 4-0 in MASCAC play and 5-1 overall, while Fitchburg State slips to 2-3 in conference play, 4-4 overall.
Fitchburg State opened the scoring in the first period as freshman Ricky Kramer brought the puck into the attacking zone and sent a pass to Timmy Genova who would send his wrist shot past the goalie for his second goal of the season. Plymouth State got the equalizer early in the second frame when a pass was intercepted and sent to the net by junior forward Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.) for his fifth tally on the season just 17 seconds in.
The Panthers grabbed their first lead of the game with five minutes to go in the second, as consecutive passes by Woody and junior Erik Strom (Gothenburg, Sweden) set up sophomore Caleb O'Brien (Saginaw, Mich.), who proceeded to wrist a shot inside the far post for his first collegiate tally.
The Green and Gold retied the contest at the 17:39 mark of the second period when sophomore Corey Hayashi gathered a loose puck off a shot by freshman Nick DiNicola, Hayashi controlled the bounce off the boards pushing the shot into the back of the net for his first collegiate score.
The visiting Panthers scored the decisive goal in the final frame on a 2-on-2 attack in the zone, as Woody faked the pass before sending a quick wrister inside the near post for his team-leading sixth score of the season, off assists from senior Andrew Wigg (Lantz, N.S.) and O'Brien.
Plymouth State held a 43-30 advantage in shots. Senior goalie Gordon Ceasar (Oak Park, Calif.) stopped 28 shots to earn the win for PSU, while senior Corey McMahon totaled 40 saves for Fitchburg State.
Fitchburg State return to the ice following an extended break on Thursday, Dec. 3rd as it hosts the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth at 7 p.m. Plymouth State will travel to Connecticut College on Tuesday for a contest starting at 5 p.m.
