Zuccaro and Lanceleve score twice each for Panthers

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Colby Lanceleve (Stewiacke, N.S.) scored the game-tying goal with 9:27 remaining in regulation and then completed the comeback by tallying the game-winner just 26 seconds into overtime Tuesday night to lift the Plymouth State University men's hockey team to a 4-3 victory at Connecticut College.

The Panthers improved their record to 6-1 with their fifth straight win while the Camels fell to 0-2-1.

Sophomore Chris Zuccaro (Hudson, N.H.) chipped in with a pair of goals for the Panthers, and senior Andrew Wigg (Lantz, Nova Scotia) and freshman Matt Volonnino (Hacketstown, N.J.) contributed with two assists for the winning side. Freshman Evan Morelli (Reading, Mass.) turned aside 39 shots in goal to earn the victory.

Connecticut College seniors Tim DiPretoro (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Joe Birmingham (Medford, N.J.) both finished with one goal and one assist for the hosts.  Sophomore Cory Swift (West Seneca, N.Y.) added a goal and Joe Giordano (Ellington, Conn.) recorded two assists. Sophomore Tim Cooney (Rocky Hill, Conn.) made 17 saves in the setback.

The Camels opened the scoring with 12:53 remaining in the first period. DiPretoro fired a shot that was saved by Morelli, but Birmingham pounced on the rebound and flicked one in. Giordano earned the second assist on the goal.

The Camels controlled most of the action in the opening frame. But with 14 seconds remaining, the Panthers evened things up at one with a shorthanded marker. Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.) delivered a centering pass to Zuccaro, who made a nice stick fake with the puck before depositing the equalizer in the back of the net.

Midway through the second period, the Camels regained the lead. DiPretoro took a pass from Giordano and went to his backhand for a goal in the slot.  But just 56 seconds later, Zuccaro scored his second of the game to even things up at two.

The Camels responded though and with 11:11 remaining, the hosts regained the lead, 3-2. Cory Swift did a nice job collecting a rebound in the slot area and flicking one past Morelli for the Camels.

However, the Panthers simply would not go away and with 9:27 remaining the Panthers evened the score at three. Wigg delivered an entry pass from the point and Lanceleve unloaded with a one-timer from below the left circle that tied the game.

The Panthers put together an odd man rush in the early moments of the overtime and Lanceleve scored his sixth goal of the season to close out the victory for the visitors.

The Camels out-shot the Panthers 42-to-21 in the contest.

Plymouth State returns to MASCAC action on Thursday, Dec. 3, with a visit to Worcester State University.
