PSU Men’s Ice Hockey defeats Worcester State

Dupell scores twice as Panthers remain unbeaten in MASCAC

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Dan Dupell (Collegeville, Pa) scored two goals Thursday evening and Plymouth State University held off Worcester State University, 3-1, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey game at the Hart Recreational Center on the campus of Holy Cross.

The Panthers improve to 7-1-0 overall with their sixth straight win, maintaining a perfect 5-0-0 MASCAC record, while the Lancers drop to 2-7-1 (0-4-1 MASCAC).

After a scoreless first period, Dupell put the Panthers on the board with a power play goal at 8:18 of the second frame. A shot by junior Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill) from the half board was deflected aside by the Lancers net minder, but Dupell picked up the rebound and tapped the puck past the diving goalie to give the Panthers the 1-0 lead.

Dupell struck again about six minutes later, taking a pass from sophomore Chris Zuccaro (Hudson, N.H.) at the top of the faceoff circle and ripping a snap shot over the goalie's glove side shoulder to take a 2-0 lead.

The Lancers clawed their way back to within one six minutes into the third period. John Skarlis (Waterloo, Iowa)  saucered a  perfect pass right on the tape of Alex Dewitz (Oronoco, Minn.), who tapped the puck under the diving Gordon Ceasar (Oak Park, Calif.).

PSU added an insurance goal with just under three minutes remaining as junior Erik Strom (Gothenburg, Sweden) passed the puck to freshman Ludvig Steenberg (Stockholm, Sweden) at the top of the slot, and Steenburg ripped a powerful shot through the Lancer defense and past the Lancer netminder to clinch the 3-1 victory.

Freshman goaltender Max Kirkwood (Brunswick, Ohio) kept the Lancers in the game as he registered 21 saves. Ceasar earned the win for the Panthers as he totaled 16 saves on the evening.

Both teams play MASCAC games again on Saturday as the Lancers look to end their six-game losing streak at Salem State University and the Panthers entertain Westfield State University on Support the Troops Night at Hanaway Rink.
