PSU Men’s Ice Hockey gets past Wentworth

Volonnino helps #13/#15 Panthers get back on track

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.) tallied two goals and an assist Saturday evening as Plymouth State University skated past Wentworth Institute of Technology, 4-2, in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink.

Volonnino scored once in the first period, assisted on the go-ahead goal in the middle frame, and scored the game-winner in the third period. Freshman goalie Evan Morelli (Reading, Mass.) made 24 saves in goal for the Panthers to backbone the win.

PSU, ranked 13th by D3hockey.com and 15th by USCHO.com, improve to 11-2 overall, while Wentworth drops to 3-10-1.

The teams traded first period goals. Junior Jake Flynn (Lino Lakes, Minn.) gave Wentworth the lead on a rebound off a shot by senior Stephen McManus (Westwood, Mass.), and Volonnino evened the score with a shot from the right circle three minutes later.

PSU out-shot the visitors 11-5 in the second period, and took the lead for good with the only goal of the frame. Volonnino slid a nice pass from the slot to senior Josh Woody (Sunderland, Md.) near the left post, and Woody redirected the puck past the goalie for a 2-1 lead.

Volonnino struck again for PSU eight minutes into the third period, carrying the puck out of the left corner and skating around the goaled before tucking it inside the right post. Wentworth made a comeback bid with a shorthanded goal by sophomore Erik Andersson (Madison, N.J.) with 57 seconds remaining in the game, but junior Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.) sealed the win with an empty-netter with 10 seconds to go.

PSU finished with a 30-24 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Joel Miller (Calgary, Alb.) made 26 saves in goal for the Leopards.

Plymouth State returns to Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action Thursday at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (7:30 p.m.). Wentworth hosts Becker College next Saturday in a ECAC Northeast match-up (3:00 p.m.)
