Wigg leads Panthers to victory, scoring 100th career point
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Andrew Wigg (Lantz, N.S.) notched two goals and an assist Saturday evening, including his 100th career point, as Plymouth State University got past Fitchburg State University, 3-1, in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink.
MASCAC-leading Plymouth State improves to 13-3-1 overall and 8-1-1 in conference play, while the Falcons drop to 7-10-1 and 4-6-1 in league outings.
Upset-minded Fitchburg State held a 1-0 lead after two periods, but Wigg set up the tying goal a minute into the third frame before scoring the game-winner at 13:43 and adding an empty-netter in the final seconds. Wigg leads the team and ranks second in the MASCAC in scoring with 20 points on seven goals and 13 assists.
Wigg also upped his career marks to 40 goals and 60 assists in 93 games, becoming the 11th player in school history to reach the 100-point plateau.
PSU senior goaltender Gordon Ceasar (Oak Park, Calif.) needed to make just 18 saves to earn the victory, improving his record to 10-2. Freshman Quinn Wold (Aurora, Colo.) made 28 saves in the Falcon net as PSU out-shot the visitors 31-19.
Fitchburg State got on the board just four minutes into the game when junior Mike Fish (Salisbury, Mass.) stuffed home his fourth of the year inside the right post. PSU had shot advantages of 13-7 in the first period and 12-4 in the second but Fish's goal stood as the difference.
Freshman Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.) broke through for PSU in what essentially a power play goal as his team-leading 10th of the season came just two seconds after the FSU penalty expired. Volonnino converted from the left circle after some nifty tic-tac-toe passing by Wigg and junior Ian McGilvrey (Omaha, Neb.)
Wigg potted the game-winner at 13:43 after a nice one-on-one move against the Fitchburg defense and snapping a wrister through the goalie's pads. He sealed the win and his 100th point with just one second on the clock.
Plymouth State is home again on Thursday, hosting Worcester State University in a MASCAC encounter (6:00 p.m.) Fitchburg State plays Thursday as well, visiting UMass Dartmouth at 7:30 p.m.
