Panthers win fourth straight to remain atop MASCAC
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Juniors Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Ian McGilvrey (Omaha, Neb.) tallied a goal and an assist each Saturday evening as Plymouth State University skated past the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 4-2, in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink.
Plymouth State won its fourth straight game to improve to 16-3-1 overall and remains atop the MASCAC standings with an 11-1-1 conference mark. The Corsairs drop to 6-11-3 and 5-7-2 in league outings.
The Panthers peppered the Corsairs goal with 51 shots on the evening while allowing just 20 at the other end of the ice. PSU led 3-0 after two periods and 4-1 before UMD tacked on a late goal.
PSU senior goaltender Gordon Ceasar (Oak Park, Calif.) made 18 saves to help secure the win. UMD sophomore Drew Michals (Newton, Mass.) had a busy night between the pipes, and made 47 saves in the setback.
The home team had a 17-2 advantage in shots in the first period and took a 1-0 lead. McGilvrey deflected in a shot from the point by junior Tommy Dowell (Olathe, Kans.) for his fifth goal of the season midway through the frame.
PSU had another dominant second period, out-shooting the Corsairs by an 18-5 count and scoring two goals for a 3-0 lead. Junior Matt Vermillion (South Lyon, Mich.) fired a slap shot from the left circle through the goalie's pads for his first goal of the season at the 3:41 mark, and sophomore Caleb O'Brien (Saginaw, Mich.) blasted home a shot from the left side with two minutes to go in the period after Michals had made a save on Economos from the right side.
UMD got on the scoreboard six minutes into the third period when freshman Kris Holmes (Newburyport, Mass.) pounded home a rebound after Ceasar had stopped junior Tanner Zacharewicz (Ludlow, Mass.). PSU restored the three-goal lead with just over seven minutes to play when freshman Ludvig Steenberg (Stockholm, Sweden) sent Economos in on a short-handed breakaway and Economos buried his 10th goal of the season, which is tied for the team lead.
The Corsairs rounded out the scoring with just nine seconds remaining as junior Matt Baldino (Woburn, Mass.) potted his third of the season.
PSU is back in action with a key game Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Salem State University, as the Vikings trail the Panthers by just one point in the MASCAC standings. UMD plays a non-conference game Tuesday at Stonehill College (7:00 p.m.)
