PSU Men’s Ice Hockey falls to Utica in season opener

Volonnino collects two points for Panthers in setback 

            UTICA, N.Y. – Roman Ammirato scored a pair of goals Saturday evening to lead Utica College past Plymouth State University, 6-4, in a non-conference men's ice hockey game at the Utica Memorial Auditorium in what was the season opener for PSU.

            Utica, which opened its season Friday night with a 6-2 victory over Fredonia (N.Y.), outscored the Panthers 3-2 in each of the first two periods before a scoreless third period. Ammirato scored the last goal of the first period and the first goal of the second period to put the Pioneers ahead for good, 4-2.

            PSU got goals from four different players, including a goal and an assist from sophomore Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.). The Panthers will be back on Thursday evening for the home opener at Hanaway Rink against Stonehill College (6:00 p.m.)

PSU HIGHLIGHTS

* Plymouth State got first-period goals from Volonnino and senior Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.), but trailed 3-2 after 20 minutes. Economos' goal was PSU's only goal on seven power play chances.

* PSU scored two goals in the final six minutes of the second period. Sophomore Michael Covach (Shillington, Pa.) knocked one home at 14:01, and classmate Ludvig Steenberg (Stockholm, Sweden) scored what turned out to be the final goal with 14 seconds left in the middle frame. Senior Tommy Dowell (Olathe, Kan.) picked up his second assist of the night on Steenberg's goal.

* Sophomore goalie  Evan Morelli (Somewhere) made 19 saves as the Panthers out-shot Utica, 32-25.

* PSU is coming off a 21-5-1 season last year, setting a school record for wins in a season. Utica was 14-10-4 last year. 

NEXT GAME

The Panthers return home to make their 2016-17 Hanaway Rink debut this Thursday, Nov. 3, in a non-conference match-up vs. Stonehill College (6:00 p.m.)
