PSU Men’s Ice Hockey upends Stonehill in home opener

Stevens scores twice for Panthers in non-conference victory

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Ryan Stevens (Colleyville, Texas) scored a pair of goals Thursday evening to lead Plymouth State University to a 7-2 non-conference victory over Stonehill College in the men's ice hockey home opener at Hanaway Rink.

            Senior Erik Strom (Gothenburg, Sweden) also collected three assists for the Panthers. PSU out-shot the visitors 38-16 to pick up its first victory of the season (1-1-1). Stonehill, which had defeated Plymouth State last year, 3-1, falls to 1-1-1 this season.

PSU HIGHLIGHTS

* Plymouth State scored three goals in a three-and-a-half minute stretch late in the first period to take a 3-0 lead. Stevens put the Panthers on the board with his first of the season at 14:44; freshman Tim Larocque (Middleboro, Mass.) followed with his first just 32 seconds later; and senior Ryan Callahan (Londonderry, N.H.) finished off the rally with his first of the season at 18:17.

* Stonehill kept the game within reach in the second period, with freshman Nicholas Godin (New London, N.H.) scoring the only goal of the frame on the power play late in the period to pull the Skyhawks to within two goals entering the third period.

* PSU put the game out of reach with three goals in the first nine minutes of the final stanza. Sophomore Tim Perron (Northborough, Mass.) knocked in a rebound on a power play three minutes in; freshman Drake Longaker (San Jose, Calif.) tallied his first collegiate goal at 7:35; and Stevens tacked on his second of the night at 9:07 to make it 6-1.

* Sophomore Cam Cundy (Portsmouth, N.H.) rounded out the scoring for PSU with his first of the season with four minutes remaining, and freshman Jack Hall (Shelburne, Vt.) added a power play goal for the visitors with 2:43 to play.

* Freshman Thierry Messervier (Montreal, Que.) earned the victory in his first collegiate start in the Panther net, making 14 saves. Sophomore Billy Palmer (Cranston, R.I.) registered 23 saves for Stonehill, and classmate Kyle Paquette (Tewksbury, Mass.) appeared in his first game and recorded eight saves in the final nine minutes.
