PSU Men’s Ice Hockey power past Framingham State

Stevens' hat trick paces Panthers to MASCAC victory

            FRAMINGAM, Mass. – Sophomores Ryan Stevens (Colleyville, Texas) and Matt Volonnino (Hackettsville, N.J.) combined for seven points Thursday evening as Plymouth State University cruised past Framingham State University, 10-1, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey game at Loring Arena.

            Stevens recorded a hat trick on three short-handed goals and Volonnino collected a goal and three assists as the Panthers improved to 4-2 overall and remained undefeated in MASCAC play at 3-0-0. Framingham dropped its home opener to dip to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in conference games.

GAME NOTES

* Plymouth State went 4-for-9 on the power play in addition to Stevens' three short-handed markers for seven special teams goals.

*The Panthers scored four times in the first period and added two in the middle frame to open up a 6-0 lead after 40 minutes. It was 7-0 before the Rams got on the scoreboard five minutes into the third period.

* Volonnino assisted on the first three goals of the night, power play markers by senior Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and junior Chris Zuccaro (Hudson, N.H.) and Stevens' first goal of the night.

* Freshman Tim Larocque (Middleboro, Mass.) added a goal with a minute to go in the period to make it 4-0 after one. Stevens and Volonnino added second period goals to extend the margin to 6-0.

* Sophomore Ludvig Steenberg (Stockholm, Sweden) got on the board for PSU early in the third period before Tyler Colacchio (Bellingham, Mass.) broke up the shutout for Framingham State with a power play goal at 5:15.

* Stevens completed his hat trick with 3:40 remaining, and freshman Kyle Orgel (El Segundo, Calif) and senior Tommy Dowell (Olathe, Kan.) rounded out the scoring in the final three minutes.

* PSU freshmen goalies Thierry Messervier (Chambly, Que.) and Andreas Pettersson (Trollhattan, Sweden) combined for 16 saves in the Panther goal. 

UP NEXT

* Both teams play conference games again on Saturday as PSU hosts Fitchburg State at 6:00 p.m. at Hanaway Rink and Framingham State hosts Westfield State.

* Saturday's game is Salute the Troops Night at Hanaway Rink, and is also Men's Hockey Alumni Night. The annual alumni game will precede the varsity game.
