Morelli, Dupell honored in Men's Ice Hockey; Brunnette tabbed in Men's Track & Field
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Three Plymouth State University student-athletes were recognized Monday with weekly recognition from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) and the Little East Conference (LEC) for their performances in Panther contests last week.
Sophomore Evan Morelli (Reading, Mass.) was named MASCAC Men's Ice Hockey Goalie of the Week, senior Dan Dupell (Collegeville, Pa.) earned a spot on the MASCAC Weekly Honor Roll, and sophomore Sam Brunnette (Newport, Vt.) was named LEC Men's Indoor Track & Field Track Athlete of the Week.
A 6'1, 190-pounder, Morelli made 24 saves in Saturday's 3-0 victory over Westfield State. He made 21 saves in the first two periods but needed to make just three stops in the third period to record his first career shutout and improve his season record to 6-2-1. Morelli leads the MASCAC in winning percentage (.722) and ranks sixth with a 2.75 goals against average and eighth with a .901 save percentage.
A 5'9, 185-pound forward, Dupell collected four points on three goals and one assist in a 2-0 week for the Panthers. He tallied a goal and an assist in the 5-0 win at Worcester State on Thursday and scored two goals in Saturday's 3-0 win over Westfield State, including the game-winner and an empty netter. Dupell is second on the team and tied for fifth in scoring in the MASCAC with 20 points, while leading the team and ranking tied for third in the league with 14 assists.
The Panthers, 12-5-2 overall and 10-1-1 in the MASCAC, play just one game this week, a conference game Saturday at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (4:00 p.m.)
A sophomore distance runner, Brunnette took fifth place in a highly-competitive 3000 meter race at the Tufts Stampede, which included five of the nation's top 11 times this season. Brunnette finished in a time of 8:31.68, which is the fastest time in the Little East Conference this season, the 11th-fastest time in the nation this year, and the second-best among sophomores.
The Panther track & field teams are back in action this Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Dartmouth College Indoor Classic, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in Hanover, N.H.
