Stevens named Player of the Week after huge season-opening performance

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University junior Ryan Stevens (Colleyville, Texas) was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men's Ice Hockey Player of the Week as announced by the league office this afternoon.

Stevens, the Panthers' leading scorer last winter, picked up right where he left off scoring a pair of goals and assisting on another as PSU topped #6 Endicott College, 3-2, in the season opener last Friday.

The 6-3 forward put the Panthers in the lead ten minutes into the game. PSU took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play and Stevens found the back of the net with assists coming from junior Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.) and sophomore Victor Bergstrom (Angelholm, Sweden).

Endicott scored a pair of power play goals of its own to pull ahead 2-1, but Stevens scored a shorthanded goal to even things at 2-2 just 12 seconds later.

On a two-on-one break, Stevens found sophomore Alec LeFave (Hudson, N.H.) with a centering pass and the forward scored the game-winner for the upset win.

PSU is on the road tomorrow for its MASCAC opener against Worcester State (7:00 p.m.), before kicking off the home schedule on Saturday (Nov. 4) against NCAA D-II Stonehill College on Alumni Night. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m.
