PSU Men’s Ice Hockey players earn MASCAC recognition

Stevens, Morelli honored with inclusion on Weekly Honor Roll

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – A pair of Plymouth State University men's ice hockey players earned weekly honors from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) after the Panthers' 4-0 win over NCAA Division II Saint Anselm College on Saturday.

Junior goaltender Evan Morelli (Reading, Mass.) and junior forward Ryan Stevens (Colleyville, Texas) were both named to the MASCAC Men's Ice Hockey Weekly Honor Roll.

Morelli made 28 saves en route to his second shutout of the year, improving his individual record to 7-1-0. The Hawks' best opportunity to light the lamp came late in the second period when a Saint Anselm forward broke free from the blue line and skated in for a one-on-one with Morelli. The 6-1 goalie, with his stick flat on the ice, made an incredible save to keep the visitors off the scoreboard and preserve the shutout.

Morelli is second in the MASCAC and fourth in the nation in both goals against average (1.37) and save percentage (0.950), and his 0.875 winning percentage leads the league.

Stevens had a hand in two of PSU's four goals. With Plymouth State leading 1-0 midway through the second period, Stevens blasted a shot on goal. The Saint Anselm goalie made a sprawling save to his right, but left the rebound in front of an open net and junior Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.) cleaned it up. Stevens added his fifth goal of the year midway through the third period on the tail end of a 5-on-3. Just as the first penalty was expiring, the 6-3 forward hacked at a puck in front of the Hawks' goal and it flipped up and over the Hawks' goalie.

Stevens is tied for fourth in the MASCAC and ninth in the country with 1.64 points per game. He leads the Panthers with 13 assists and 18 points and his five goals are tied for second-most on the team.

The Panthers (8-2-1, 5-1-0 MASCAC) close out the fall semester with a road game at Castleton University on Wednesday with puck-drop set for 7:00 p.m.
