Volonnino named Player of the Week for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The top goal-scorer for the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team earned weekly honors from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) after helping guide the Panthers to a couple of 4-3 wins last week.
Junior Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.) scored a pair of goals as PSU went 2-0 in the team's first action in 2018 to earn MASCAC Men's Ice Hockey Player of the Week honors for the first time this season.
Both of Volonnino's tallies came in the Panthers' 4-3 win over Worcester State University on Saturday. In a battle for the top spot in the MASCAC, the 5-11 forward gave PSU an early lead with a wrister from the right circle at the 4:07 mark of the first period.
Late in the second period, with the score tied at two apiece, Volonnino struck again. After collecting a pass in the left circle with his back to the goal, Volonnino turned and whipped a wrist shot to the nearside to put the Panthers up for good.
Volonnino's eight goals are tops on the team and tied for fifth-most in the MASCAC. He is second on the team in scoring with 16 points on the year.
The Panthers (10-3-1, 6-1-0 MASCAC), in a stretch of 12-straight league games, travel to Fitchburg State on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. contest. PSU is back at Hanaway Rink on Saturday (Jan. 13) against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
